In the Zen Garden

Sally Kelly, Ireland

Background Information

The creation of harmony is conveyed in this beaded representation of a Japanese garden. The characteristic ‘dry landscape’ of the Zen garden, reflected through the inclusion of pebbles, as solitary rocks, set among circular bead rows depicting the smooth raked gravel which symbolises ripples or waves. A latched closure provides a gateway to the sacred elements of the lotus flower and Buddha heads.

Technical Explanation

Flat peyote stitch for the lotus flower and backstitch for the embroidered sections. Varnished pebbles and a washer are encased in peyote bezels. Brick stitch picot and fringing complete the edgings.
